Received my first culms of bamboo and getting ready to split, they have a check split all the way down. Almost directly opposite they are cracked almost from one end to the other, but the cracks don’t line up. Should I just finish the split at one crack and then divide the halves in half again and again until I get my strips?  (Peter Van Schaack)

I do not worry so much about getting the culms split exactly in half. I split them in approx. half or thirds then draw a diagonal line thru the interiors then spit them on out I can easily put the spines back in order by matching up the diagonal line. you divide the number of splines you have by 6 then you can select one strip from each quadrant if you want to.   (Timothy Troester)
