I ran across a taper that I was curious about. Source was iffy, so I wanted to see if it was a well-known taper or not. Or how it compared to other well-known tapers. Is there any way to input a taper, then have software/computer analyze it to see if it matches and existing taper in a database somewhere? Just more on my quest to figure out in my head how these tapers make sense or not. I can show the taper, but hesitated about sending it out on the list. (Sam Nielson)

The Pro Version (i.e. the one that costs money) of RodDNA has that capability. I have it and would be willing to see if your taper matches anything. You can send it to me privately or put it out on the list. (Mike McGuire)

Larry Tusoni's Rod DNA Designer program will match any taper you enter to all of the tapers in the RodDNA data base and give you a list of the closest 12 tapers based on any one of five parameters. However, even when the correlation is very high, the stress curve of the models listed may be quite different from yours. Nevertheless, it is a very good place to start. (JW Healy)

You can do a simple program in excel with a simple stress program using the cross-section areas at the stations and compare the two tapers and even adjust the stress curve and match and come up with the correct dimensions to match the rod.  (Ken Paterson)

I can do it for you in My Program "Tapers of Bamboo Flyrods" Very easily and accurately. All I need is the taper and I will send you a complete analysis of the taper along with any other similar types. (Bob Norwood)

Well, I've finally recovered enough to at least plan fly rod building again!  I like to invent so I decided to try to develop some equation based taper designs; parabola and logarithm come to mind.  I have a problem however.  There are a number of older taper analysis programs such as Wayne's hexrod however computers have moved on.  My 64-bit laptop will not run them!  There is RodDNA and online HEXROD however, online tied programs have a way of going away suddenly either from power outages or permanently from other reasons.  HEXROD is excellent but online only and RodDNA is a bit more than I need.

Anyone have any suggestions for something similar to the online HEXROD but downloadable?  (Onis Cogburn)

You could try the Flexrod spreadsheet on the Sowbug. There are tapers for it also.  (Michael Lineback)

The last time I used HexRod it ran 64 bit. I'll double check that and report back. (Wayne Cattanach)
