I want to make a rod for a friend who is retiring.  He doesn't fly fish, but has a boat and fishes for salmon and albacore.  I'm thinking a 7' rod for 15-20 lb test line.  I've seen old split bamboo boat rods, and even have one in my garage, but the ones I've seen seem to be real clubs, and I've been unable to locate any tapers in the RodDNA database or online taper libraries.  Does anyone have any experience with boat rods, or have tapers they would share?  (Robert Kope)

If you don't find a taper, I would suggest possibly using a straight line taper (rate at around 0.013" per 5”) You could establish the weight of the lures likely to be used and then correlate that to a flyline weight to establish an appropriate tip dimension. Or else fit a spinning reel to various lineweight flyrods and try throwing a lure of the size likely to be used to establish the best lineweight rating. (Stephen Dugmore)
