Do any of you dress the inside of the female ferrule while you are doing your fitting work? While fitting my latest set of ferrules, I noticed a distinct scratch on the male ferrule after fully seating in the female. The scratch was 3/4 the length of the male ferrule which tells me the burr was somewhere near the top of the female. I rolled some sandpaper around a small drill bit and tried to spin it inside the ferrule but was never able to get rid of what ever was causing the scratch. Any thoughts?  (John Smith)

JOhn you can get galling inside the female. It is best to lap the ferrules. Chris Bogart does a nice tutorial on this. You can see it here.  (Ken Weymouth)

A trick I learned from Tom Smithwick is to wrap the finest steel wool around a mandrel and spray with WD-40.  Spin this inside the female barrel, and you’ll have a beautiful surface with no galling.  Yes, I know, WD-40 is usually thought to be a big no-no, but thorough cleaning is easy.  Once the surface is already galled, however, proper lapping is required. I do and upon the suggestion of Chris got a selection of Blind hole laps + some diamond paste from MSC.

I chuck the lap into the lathe chuck and hold the ferrule by hand. Doesn't take long to get them shiny. You will need a selection of sizes.  (Don Anderson)
